I am writing to express my interest in the Su

Intern position at D.
E. Shaw Research. I am a
junior in the College of Engineering at Cornell University, majoring in Chemical Engineering with a minor
in Business.
I am very interested in h
ow D.
E. Shaw Research is using
computational methods to better
understand and improve the process of drug discovery.
This past summer, I interned at the Argonne National Laboratory in the Nanoscience and
Technology
Division where I spearheaded a project
investigating catalysis on
iridium oxide surfaces through theory
and computational modeli
ng.
To execute this project, I
first had to
understand the theory behind the
plane
-wav
e density function code used to
model the molecular structures
which
required extensive
literature
research on density functional
theory
. I then proceeded to use the computationa
l power of
the facilities at the Center of Nanoscale Material (CNM) to model out several iridium oxide surfaces.
Using the
models, I computed equilibrium lattice constants, k
-point
convergences, bulk modulus, and
surface energies to analyze the accuracy of the mo
del and understand the
electrocatalytic properties. I
also created several Bash and Octave scripts on my own to extract
pertinent values from the output
script, which greatly sped up the process of computing many of
these properties and parameters.
I
deliver
ed
a generalized version of my scripts
to my supervisor which
she c
ontinues
to use in her work on
a similar project
. From this experience, I learned the power of computational modelin
g for gaining
insight into experimental phenomena th
at are not yet fully explained.
I am very interested in the work at D. E. Shaw Research and th
e motivation and passion behind its
people. With my background in Chemical Engineering and my experience in theory and
computational
mode
ling,
I am confident I can contribute positively to the
efforts of the organization. I
am very
interested in how to model various biochemical process
es, and I believe I can bring the
same level of
passion and mot
ivation to D. E. Shaw Research. I would welcome the opportunity to speak with you and
can be reached at (xxx) xxx

xxx@cornell.edu
. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Analysis
The middle paragraph is dedicated solely to emphasizing previous research experience as it
relate
s to the position with this organization. It is key to highlight, as this student does in the
final paragraph, how the skills he gained from his previous research experience will serve him in
this internship. To determine the most relevant skills and attributes to highlight in a cover letter,
review the position description thoroughly noting the required/desired qualifications.
Anna Gear 1234 Best Street Pittsburgh PA, 15213 (412) - 555 - 1234 annagear@andrew.cmu.edu September 23 , 2016 Awesome Engineering Co, 5678 Main Street Pittsburgh, P A 15213 Dear Recruiting Manager, I am writing to apply for the Research and Development Engineer position, which was shared with me by a recruiter at the Technical Opportunities Conference 2016 at Carnegie Mellon University. Currently, I am pursuing a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University with an expected completion date of May 2017. I believe that my pr ofessional experience in the field of Mechanical Engineering, especially in product design and development , coupled with the research I am currently conducting a t CMU have provided me with the design and development skills needed to solve advanced engineer ing problems and to be successful in this role. Most recently, I spent two years working in Research and Development at National Engineering, Inc., where I contributed to the area of advanced product technology development and worked with a team of experts in Mechanical Engineering. As part of the research team, I designed and developed two new one way clutch technologies for the two wheeler ind ustry. I was also the lead engineer in the design and development of a new seal mechanism which provides zero grease leakage and a longer running life. In addition, I was involved in several other projects, including improving thrust load carrying capacity for a ball bearing and large radial - axial load carrying bearing design, for which both have been submitted for patents at the Indian Patent Office. This practical experience in engineering design and development, as well as working with a collaborative t eam, would allow me to contribute effectively in this position. My current research at Carnegie Mellon University focuses on understanding the design process and design and development of Fall Aid Health Care devices and Ship Hull Cleaning Robots. My past experience and the current research are similar to the position you are offering: it involves finding the root cause of the problem, mapping a plan to tackle the problem and designing the mechanisms that could solve it in a cost effective and efficient ma nner. Dear Recruiting Manager,
I am writing to apply for the Research and
Development Engineer position, which was shared with me by
a recruiter at the
Technical Opportunities Conference 2016 at Carnegie Mellon University. Currently, I am pursuing a Master’s degree in
Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University with an expected completion date of May 2017. I believe that my
pr
ofessional experience in the field of Mechanical Engineering, especially in product design and development
,
coupled with
the research I am currently conducting a
t
CMU have provided me with the design and
development skills
needed to
solve
advanced engineer
ing problems and to be successful in this role.
Most recently, I spent two years working in Research and Development at National Engineering,
Inc., where I contributed to
the area of advanced product technology development and worked with a team of experts in Mechanical Engineering. As
part of the research team, I designed and developed two new one way clutch technologies for the two wheeler ind
ustry. I
was also the lead engineer in the design and development of a new seal mechanism which provides zero grease leakage
and a longer running life. In addition, I was involved in several other projects, including improving thrust load carrying
capacity
for a ball bearing and large radial
-
axial load carrying bearing design, for which both have been submitted for
patents at the Indian Patent Office. This practical experience in engineering design and development, as well as working
with a collaborative t
eam, would allow me to contribute effectively in this position.
My current research at Carnegie Mellon University focuses on understanding the design process and design and
development of Fall Aid Health Care devices and Ship Hull Cleaning Robots. My past
experience and the current research
are similar to the position you are offering: it involves finding the root cause of the problem, mapping a plan to tackle the
problem and designing the mechanisms that could solve it in a cost effective and efficient ma
nner. I have a proven track
record in the field of product design and development and I believe I can make a positive impact in solving complex
engineering problems as well as driving innovative results.
I have always enjoyed research and creative proble
m solving and I believe that my present and previous experience will
help me to work as a part of a team and be an effective representative of the Awesome Engineering Company. If given an
opportunity, I know I will be a valuable asset to your company. I th
ank you for taking the time and consideration and I hope
to hear from you soon.
Best Regards,
Anna Gear

The Big Picture of Saline YL
Here is a look at some long-term aims and
overarching elements of our ministry.
The Theme of the Semester
Hebrews 10:24-25: "And let us consider how we may
spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not
giving up meeting together as some are in the habit of
doing, but encouraging one another – and all the more
as you see the day approaching."
A Big Goal for the Year
It is our hope and prayer that Saline YL will send over
20 high school kids to camp this summer. Please pray
that God will make this happen!
Old Leaders in New Places
Emily: This summer she left for Prague to share
Christ's love through teaching kids English. To learn
more about the crazy-awesome ways in which God is
working in her life, read her blog!
Claire: She has moved to Seattle and is working as a
Nurse. Fun fact: she lives with other previous YL
leaders!
Meaghan: She is living it up in New York working for
Seventeen magazine. She has just recently become a
YL leader in the Upper-West side of Manhattan and
went to camp with them earlier this month. She also
has a great blog that is worth the read!

Dear Parents, Carers and friends of St Michael's,
Welcome back to Semester 2. I hope that you and your families have had a relaxing and happy
break and are ready to begin an exciting new semester. It has been a very busy and
successful holiday for many of our students, staff and parents. Just a few of the many activities
included:
? Staff changes: We welcome back Mr Luke Halvorsen who is returning from leave. We
also welcome Ms Bianca Zorn who joins our Learning Support team and Mr Glenn Walker
who is replacing Hollie King while she is on maternity leave. We congratulate Mrs King
and her husband on the birth of their son, Leo William who arrived on the first Monday of
the holidays.
? Confraternity & QISSN
competition: I would like to
congratulate our teams, our
staff and supporters on a
wonderful week away in
Rockhampton. I was
extremely proud that our
students never gave up, even
when games were tough and
when decisions didn't go their
way. Our Confro boys won the
"Spirit of the Carnival" trophy in recognition of their great sportsmanship and spirit.
Georgia Boevink was named in the "Top 10" players across the carnival and Sara h
Sakamoto was named as St Michael's MVP (Most Valuable Player) by our opposing
teams.
? Congratulations to Amy Coulston (pictured below) who won bronze for Australia in the
High Jump at the Oceania Games and to our equestrians who competed in the
Queensland Interschool Equestrian competition:
o Zara Jones was awarded 1m Showjumping State Champion. Zara and her horse,
Peace Image will represent Qld at the Nationals in Sydney later this year.
o Georgia Stephenson (pictured below) came 6th overall out of 40 riders in the
80cm showjumping and also received 5th place in one of the showjumping
rounds.
o Rebecca Harbulot came 6th in novice freestyle, 7th in novice dressage and 1 1th
in preliminary dressage.

? Over the holidays we had many of our talented Science students completing their Certificate 2 in Sampling Methodology at
the College. This is a wonderful achievement and something which will provide great future employment opportunities for
these students.
? Our Bill Turner Cup students took part in a soccer training session for their upcoming game. The boys are currently
ranked in the top 8 schools in Qld and top 32 in Australia. Hopefully, they can continue to move up these ranks with their
next game. Thanks to Dr Kemp and Mr Ellison for organising these sessions.
? Congratulations to Niamh Bourke and Nathan French who played the parts of Princess Jasmin and Genie of the Lamp
respectively in the Spotlight Theatrical Company production of A Lad 'n' His Lamp during the school holidays. Both
students gave excellent performances and delighted the crowds of young people who came to see 'The InGENIEously
Magical Panto'.
Please remember that we will have our Parent Teacher interviews this Thursday afternoon and evening. More details ab out this
event will appear below in this bulletin.
I would like to remind parents and carers about the importance of supporting the College's Uniform Policy. Correct uniform n ot only
provides our students and the wider community with a positive image, but also helps our students to remain safe by m eeting our
College's Workplace, Health and Safety guidelines. A good example of this, is our policy on student hair length. As in the world of
work, long, untied hair becomes a safety risk due to the risk of it being caught up in machines, as a fire risk during experiments , or
torn out during sports or general play. Our College's policy on hair for both boys and girls is that if the hair is beyon d collar length,
then it needs to be either cut or tied low, tidy and tight so that it not a safety risk.
From the beginning of this semester, we will have a Crossing Supervisor morning and afternoon on our Jondique Avenue crossing .
I spoke with our community today at assembly to remind them that they need to wait for the Crossing Guard to signal with two
whistles before they step out onto the crossing.
The Gold Coast City Council has advised that the back gate (at the bottom of Petherbridge St) will be closed for the next wee k or
so as the underground pipe project is completed. Unfortunately, rain has held up this project so we will have limited acces s to our
sports field over the next two weeks.
Wishing you all a wonderful 2nd Semester.
Yours in Christ
Mr Michael Nayler
Principal

Welcome back to Term 3
We return from our 2 week holiday break after a lengthy 11 week Term 3 with everyone hopefully feeling reenergised
to commence our new Semester with a positive and committed attitude. I had the pleasure to spend the first week of
the holidays in Rockhampton supporting our fantastic Confraternity and QISSN teams. At all times there was a great
sense of pride in the commitment, team work and 'never say die' attitude of both teams. The teams and supporting
teachers will be formally congratulated at our Friday assembly in Week 1. There will be many other successes to celebrate at our
first assembly for the Term.
Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews - Thursday 14th July – school closes at 12.20pm
It is an important reminder that our Parent/Teacher/Studentinterviews will commence at 1pm on this coming Thursday in our MPC.
Students will be dismissed from classes at 12.20pm and supervision will be available for those who cannot travel directly home.
Please ensure your son or daughter advises their Pastoral Teacher if they are staying at school.
Parent/Teacher parking - We will be asking staff to park on our oval and at the back of the College on Thursday, as this will free
up our main car park and the car park adjacent to the College Chapel for visiting parents during the interview period.
Best wishes to all families for the coming week.
