Dear Reading Champions Applicant,
Thank you for your interest in the Greenwich United Way Reading Champions Program.
Currently,
o
ur tutors
work in
all the
elementary schools and
four
after
-
school programs. The program follows a specific curriculum
that has been designed by the Literacy Specialists in the Greenwich Public Schools. The purpose of our program
is to build a student’s fluency skills. Our volunteer tutors are trained to
participate in one of three different
programs which are:
Fluency Coaching
â€"
Grades 1
-
5
: In this program the Reading Champion Volunteer Tutor
w
orks with children in
individual coaching
sessions
that last 20
-
30 minutes per child by following a lesson pla
n that includes reading
selected passages with the child and reviewing difficult word/phrases, and timing the student as he/she reads.
Tutor and student also discuss the meaning of the passage
.
Passages and timers are provided
at
each
location
.
The Volunt
eer tutor also works with the student
to
master Fry words which are the 600 most frequently used
words
by grade levels
that the student must know and read automatically.
Kindergarten Tutor
â€"
in this program the Reading Champions Tutor works in the kinderga
rten classroom during
literacy and/or word study periods. The tutor will assist students either in small groups or individually as
directed by the classroom teacher.
Kinderga
rten sessions are
not
offered at
every school.
After
-
School Program
â€"
This
homework completion
program meets between the hours of 3
-
4:15
. The
Reading
Champion
s
Volunteer Tutor is
assigned to three students and works individually
on homework completion
with
each child for
approximately 20 minutes OR t
he
tutor is not assigned
to
sp
ecific students and helps
the
students
who request the tutor’s help.
