We need your vital support once again through your contribution to our annual Auction efforts. We respectfully recognize the challenged environment today's economic climate has created, but we implore you to reach into the heart of our future and give once again at whatever level you can support. Each donation counts, big or small! Throughout our history, the money generated by the Sorensen Auction made possible exclusively through the generous donations of businesses like yours , has helped to make this school the success it is today. The following Auction funded programs continue to depend on the revenues generated by your donation to the Sorensen's Auction and Soiree: • Artist in Residence: A series of qualified artist professionals who dedicate a full week with our students in hands on intensives from book writing and poetry to print making and gla sswork. These experiences envelope our students in creative learning and tie practical real - world skills through an inspiring medium. • Extracurricular Performance Groups: These treasured programs provide cherished opportunities for our students to learn con fidence, public presentation, teamwork and focus to develop concert worthy talent. They include African Drumming, Theater, Improvisation, Master Juggling, Strings, Marimbas and Special Chorus. As well, they remain available to support your business or comm unity event performance needs upon request. • Advanced Pottery: Long known for our pottery programs, we offer the kids continual exposure to a hands on pottery experience utilizing the artistic interest of our students to propel the learning of other foundat ional areas such as math, material science, engineering and chemistry. • Leadership, Demonstration and Performance: Each and every Sorensen student is an individual encouraged and supported to participate openly in the community of Sorensen Magnet as a whole . The vital skills developed through the requirements of our all - school community programs routinely create an environment where each student exercises their personal skill set as their individual role in our school. There is undoubtedly a direct translati on between the confidence and practice of these opportunities and successful life skills for the kids. • Organizational Development: In our respect for tightened State budgets and pressured funds, we utilize our Magnet Auction monies to keep our teachers at the cutting edge of learning theory and staff development. To be a successful teacher you must be a continual student. Auction funds help support the on - going training of our dedicated staff. How can you help? • Donation of your product • Generous giving of gi ft certificates or other saleable items for the auction cause • Buying a table at the auction so you and your employees can experience a Soiree of Magnet Magnitude and an unforgettable evening of dinner and dancing. • Donation of your business/personal service s or support through volunteering or in - kind giving • Financial contributions of any amount to directly support the future of our kids. We thank you for your consideration of the needs of the Sorensen kids and respectfully ask you to consider a tax deductib le donation of any kind to make this Sorensen Auction the best success yet! We continue to respect and value the partnership of your business on behalf of our kids! Principal and the entire staff of Sorensen Magnet School of the Arts & Humanities "Dear Monsieur Germain, I have just been given far too great an honour, one I neither sought nor solicited. But when I heard the news, my first thought after my mother, was of you. Without you, without the affectionate hand you extended to the poor child that I was, without your teaching and your example, none of this would have happened. I don't make too much of this sort of honour. But at least it gives me the opportunity to tell you what you have been and still are for me, and to assure you that your efforts, your work and the generous heart you put into it still live in one of your little schoolboys who, despite the years, has never stopped being your grateful pupil. I embrace you with all my heart." This letter was written by Albert Camus in 1957, a few days after receiving the Nobel Prize for literature. Camus's unfinished last novel entitled "The First Man" is both a penetrating portrayal of poverty, and an eloquent tribute to M. Germain, the primary school teacher whose commitment created a Nobel laureate. All young people need teachers like M. Germain. As José Martí and Thomas Jefferson knew, each country must strive to build a free public education system accessible to all – an education which is broad and humane as well as rigorous, which respects cultural diversity while building social cohesion, and which creates responsible citizens who are able to think critically and act independently. The fate of our society – both the individual countries from which we come and the emerging global society to which we all belong – depends, in large measure, upon the extent to which we provide an appropriate quality education to all citizens. And our capacity to educate, in turn, depends on our ability to attract, recruit, train and support competent, caring and committed teachers. In essence, my first and most important point is that: "Teachers and education are of crucial importance in preparing young people and societies for the future. Investing in education and in building a strong teaching profession makes good sense. Denying teachers the essential means to foster learning in the classroom is a crime against our children's future and violates international law." But before going too deeply into my address, I should convey to you the greetings of the Director-General of UNESCO to this Conference. We have been greatly impressed not only by the sheer size of the Conference (over 6,300 teachers from 40 countries), but by the opportunities it provides for teachers of all types from the region to share their experience, research and ideas. For us in UNESCO, Cuba has always been a strong ally in the cause of education, the most recent example of which was the very successful Regional Conference on Strategies for the Reform of Higher Education held here in November last year. I should like to pay tribute to Cuban educators for the role they have played in helping UNESCO and teachers in other countries, especially in Africa, to improve the quality of education. Fellow teachers,
